How to Store Sealed Pokémon Products (Booster Boxes, ETBs & UPCs)

CollectraTCG · Updated 21 October 2026 · 5 min read

A sealed box is only as good as its condition. Faded artwork, dented corners or damp-damaged wrap can make a big difference to how a sealed product looks, and to how much another collector would pay for it. Here is how to keep your collection mint.

Key takeaways

  • Use acrylic or plastic protectors made for booster boxes and ETBs.
  • Keep products out of direct sunlight: UV light fades artwork quickly.
  • Aim for a cool, dry, stable room; avoid lofts, garages and basements.
  • Never remove the shrink-wrap if you want a product to stay sealed.

Use protective cases

Purpose-made protectors are the best investment you can make for a sealed collection. Acrylic cases (often magnetic) are ideal for booster boxes and display pieces; clear plastic protectors work well for ETBs and stack neatly. Large boxes such as UPCs and sealed cases benefit from a cardboard outer box or a storage crate.

Keep them out of the light

Direct sunlight fades box artwork surprisingly fast, and strong indoor light does the same more slowly. Display products away from windows, or use UV-resistant cases. For long-term storage, a closed cupboard or box is best.

Control humidity and temperature

Moisture warps cardboard and can damage cards inside sealed packs; heat can loosen or deform shrink-wrap. A room that stays cool and dry all year is ideal: roughly normal living-room conditions. Lofts, garages, sheds and basements usually have large swings in temperature and humidity and are best avoided.

Stack and handle with care

  • Do not stack heavy boxes on top of ETBs or tins: lids dent easily.
  • Store booster boxes flat or upright consistently; avoid leaning them at angles for long periods.
  • Handle by the sides, not by pressing the lid, and keep products away from pets and food.
  • Keep sealed cases in their original carton: case-fresh condition is part of the value.

Keep records

Keep your order confirmations, take photos of each product when it arrives, and note where it is stored. Records help with insurance and if you ever decide to sell part of your collection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to store Pokémon booster boxes?

In an acrylic or plastic protector, in a cool, dry room away from direct sunlight.

Does sunlight damage sealed Pokémon products?

Yes. UV light fades box artwork over time, so keep products away from windows or use UV-resistant cases.

Should I remove the shrink-wrap from a booster box?

Not if you want it to remain sealed: once the wrap is removed, the product is no longer considered factory sealed.

Is it OK to store Pokémon boxes in the loft?

It is not ideal: lofts usually have big temperature and humidity swings that can warp boxes and loosen wrap.
