Booster Box vs Elite Trainer Box: Which Should You Buy?

CollectraTCG · Updated 21 October 2026 · 6 min read

Booster boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) are the two most popular sealed Pokémon TCG products, and the two we get asked about most. They look similar on a shelf, but they are built for different people. Here is how to choose.

Key takeaways

  • A booster box usually has 36 packs and the lowest price per pack: best for opening a set or chasing hits.
  • An Elite Trainer Box has fewer packs (9 in current ETBs) plus sleeves, energy, dice and a storage box: best as a gift or starter.
  • Some special sets have no English booster box at all, so the ETB is often the main way to buy them.
  • For long-term sealed collecting, both work: buy what you would be happy to keep.

What is a booster box?

A booster box (also called a booster display) is the case retailers use to sell individual packs. A standard English Pokémon booster box typically holds 36 booster packs, each with 10 cards in the current era.

Because you are buying in bulk, the price per pack is almost always lower than buying packs individually or inside other products. That makes booster boxes the favourite choice for opening a set, completing a master set or chasing illustration rares and special art cards.

What is an Elite Trainer Box?

An Elite Trainer Box is a premium bundle built around one expansion. Current Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution ETBs typically include:

  • 9 booster packs (older ETBs usually had 8 or 10)
  • 65 card sleeves featuring the box artwork
  • 45 Energy cards and a player’s guide
  • Damage-counter dice, condition markers and a competition-legal coin flip die
  • A sturdy storage box with dividers, and often a full-art promo card

Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Boxes are a special edition originally sold through the official Pokémon Center. They usually add extra booster packs and an exclusive promo card, which makes them especially popular with collectors.

Price per pack: the honest maths

Divide the price by the number of packs and the booster box wins on value almost every time. An ETB costs more per pack because you are also paying for the accessories and the box itself.

That is not a bad thing: if you would buy sleeves and a deck box anyway, or you want something that looks great unwrapped on a birthday, the ETB’s extras have real value. If you only care about the cards, the booster box is the better deal.

Which one is right for you?

  • You want to open lots of packs or complete a set → booster box.
  • You are buying a gift, especially for a younger player → Elite Trainer Box.
  • You are new to the game and want everything to start → Elite Trainer Box.
  • You want the set but there is no booster box → Elite Trainer Box, booster bundles or collections.
  • You collect sealed products long term → either; many collectors keep one of each.

Special sets without booster boxes

Some “special” English expansions are not released in booster boxes at all: Prismatic Evolutions and Black Bolt / White Flare are well-known examples. For those sets, ETBs, booster bundles, tins and collection boxes are the way to get packs, which is one reason their ETBs are so sought after.
